Embracing Change: Navigating Clinic Expansion and Leadership Pt 2
Jan 28, 2025In this second part of their “Clinic Expansions” conversation, Anna and Kendall offer a candid look at the realities of clinic leadership and management transitions. The episode begins with a discussion of their mantras for the new year, with Anna sharing her powerful perspective: "Change where necessary... I want to embrace this year the idea that I can change. There is going to be fallout, but it's going to be okay."
The conversation delves into the complexities of managing staff transitions and relationships. Kendall shares insights about accepting that not every hire will be the right fit, noting, "We're still going to hire the wrong person sometimes. Even with our skill sets that we've learned over time... someone who starts out as a fit and becomes not a fit after a year. And that's okay."
A significant portion of the episode focuses on Kendall's experience stepping in as director of their spa location, revealing valuable lessons about leadership transitions and organizational growth. She shares a crucial realization: "I can't expect it to be at year 10 when it's at year two... we have to nurture this like an infancy business."
Kendall and Anna discuss the challenges of hybrid clinical-leadership roles, with Kendall reflecting on an important lesson: "The director role is a full time position... it wasn't fair to the director. And of course she was burned out." This leads to a thoughtful discussion about the importance of realistic expectations and proper training for leadership transitions.
Throughout the episode, both hosts emphasize the importance of learning from experience and being willing to adjust approaches. As Anna notes, "You're hiring on potential... there's no way to predict whether they're actually going to do the right thing once they're hired. You're hiring on their word and what they're showing in that moment."
